Aboriginal Exhibition NGV

Strolled down to the NGV to check out the Aboriginal exhibition in which I found to be quite a interesting and visually stimulating display with a variety of indigenous art from traditional through to contemporary . A piece that particularly caught my attention was the works of Yhonnie Scarce-Kokatha ; Nukunu Opression , repression (family portrait) 2004 glass tin , prints. I love how this piece offers a juxtaposition of both freedom and constraint , how each family member is somewhat safe placed in the jar however also confined because of the white man invasion and removing their sacred culture . The glass blown bush tucker displays the isolation and absence of their heritage and accompanies each jar with such presence making such a loud statement. The composition of the jars is confronting yet visually pleasing and has a high presence.
